Stockport volunteer organisation leads the way

Stockport LINk, Stockport’s publicly supported health and social care watchdog has been selected to become a local HealthWatch pathfinder.

This means that they will be one of the first LINks in the country ready for the creation of HealthWatch, the new local independent champion for NHS patients and social care consumers.

The organisation submitted a joint bid with Stockport Council in May and the pathfinder status will last until October 2012 when other LINks around the country will follow the Stockport LINk by seeking to become the local HealthWatch.

Chair of the LINk, John Leach said, “We are thrilled by the news that we will be helping to lead the way in patient and public involvement in Stockport. As the Stockport LINk we have already made a big difference on health and social care services in Stockport and with this new status we can only grow and improve.”

Recent successes of the LINk have included working with Stockport Council’s Adult Social Care and NHS Stockport on ensuring people in care are treated with dignity. They have worked with Stepping Hill Hospital, supporting a review of their discharge procedures by outside consultants. LINk members also sit on several strategic boards where many of the big decisions on health care in Stockport are made.

Councillor John Pantall, Executive Member for Adults and Health said, “We are very pleased with the Government’s decision to give Stockport LINk pathfinder status. We are committed to maintaining and developing the skills of the LINk membership, who have made the considerable contribution John Leach describes. The Pathfinder year will offer an excellent opportunity for joint work to draw upon opportunities for learning and the further development of a local consumer voice for health and social care.”

This complements the range of other partnership work being done in Stockport with regard to the early implementation of the NHS reforms.

Subject to parliamentary approval Local HealthWatch will feed into the new HealthWatch England, a statutory but autonomous part of the Care Quality Commission. They will be a core element for securing a much wider degree of public and community engagement.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Come along and quiz local service providers.

Each month service providers and commissioners are invited to come along to LINk Briefing Sessions to discuss any new, upcoming or current services. LINk Briefing Sessions are your opportunity to ask service providers and commissioners questions about the services in Stockport.

The next LINk Briefing Session will take place on Wednesday August 24th 2011 10.00am-1.00pm at Walthew House, 112 Shaw Heath Stockport SK2 6QS. The topics will be as follows:

Immunisation - Pam Southcombe from Immunisation services will be in attendance to talk to members about Flu.

Extending the choice of healthcare provider - Angela Beagrie from NHS Stockport will be in attendance to discuss extending the choice of healthcare provider. This could mean when a GP refers a patient for treatment, as well as the local NHS hospital and/or community clinic, the GP would provide an option of choosing a local private health provider. From April 2012 the Government want NHS Stockport to start doing this in 3 new service areas.

A special LINk Briefing session looking at Mental Health Services will be held on Tuesday August 23rd 2011 1pm-4pm at the Disability Stockport meeting room, Disability Stockport, 23 High Street, Stockport SK1 1EG

Don’t let talking about dying be a conversation killer

Health specialists are urging people in Stockport to talk about dying to their family and friends - because it could change their life.

The Stockport LINk will be joining Community Health Stockport in leading a campaign in the town to tackle people’s fear and embarrassment towards discussing dying and bereavement. The plan is to get people to fill in a survey that captures their thoughts and feelings and use the results to make sure the right services are available at the right time. This will mean better end of life care enabling people, were possible, to die where they want and in the manner they want. Previous surveys have shown that seven out of ten people say they’d prefer to be able to die at home and yet most of us actually die in hospital.

The campaign coincides with the national Dying Matters Awareness Week which starts on the 16th May and will help people to start thinking about their own plans. Cath Byrne, Stockport Community Health’s MacMillan Palliative Care Lead Nurse said: “Talking about death doesn't bring it any closer. “What it is really about is planning for life and therefore making the most of the time you have. ”We need to lift the taboos about death and bereavement so that it’s no longer too difficult or frightening to talk about. A lack of conversation is perhaps the most important reason why peoples’ wishes go ignored or unfulfilled. One of the things we fear most about dying is the loss of control that’s associated with it. We believe that by helping patients to express their wishes, they can get that control back.”

Copies of the survey will be available from a stall at Stockport market every Friday during May from 10am until 2pm.
As a bonus, if you take your survey to the café at Age UK you’ll be offered a free cup of tea or coffee and cake while you fill it in. Anyone who can’t make it to Stockport market but wants to complete the survey can do so online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7Z8G5PG

Everyone is welcome to visit the stall on the Market and become involved with the Dignity in Care campaign. Residents will have the chance to find out how local organisations are working together to ensure dignity is a reality for all.

Councillor John Pantall, Executive Member for Adults & Health, said: “I am pleased that the Council and other organisations are working hard together to improve the quality of care and other services for people living in Stockport.

"Most of us at some point will be in contact with care services, be that in our work, as a service user, carer, relative or friend, and when we do we hope we will be treated with dignity and respect. All of us have good and bad experiences - we want to make sure that increasingly you see improvements," Cllr Pantall added.

Public have their say on social care services

Throughout January, members of the Stockport LINk worked together with Stockport Adult Social Care to find out how they could best measure the services they provide.

The aim of the event was to discover how service users, carers and members of the public thought Adult Social Care should measure what they do. There was also the opportunity to let the LINk know what they thought of current services and how they felt they could be improved.

LINk member David Atkinson said: “The day was very interesting. I have spoken to lots of people who are interested in services and how they are provided.

Cat Duncan-Rees from Adult Social Care said: “A huge thank you to members of the LINk who supported the consultation. Their input was invaluable and very much appreciated. It was great to be able to work so well in partnership, without their engagement I suspect we wouldn’t have done as well as we did.

Stockport LINk members would like to thank Stockport Adult Social Care for involving them prior to the consultation in order to ensure that public involvement was at the very heart of the consultation.

You can read more about the consultation in the newest edition of LINk News, out next week.

Stockport residents (and LINk members) halve NHS waiting times

Stockport residents Joyce Drummond and Clem Beaumont have helped to cut waiting times for hearing aid repairs by over half.

The campaigning duo are members of the Stockport LINk, a grassroots run health and social care watchdog.

Joyce, who uses a hearing aid said “We got a lot of feedback from LINk members and the public telling us about the long waiting times for hearing aid repairs.

“Some people had to wait as long as six weeks to get their hearing aids repaired which obviously caused them real problems but even the average wait of 15 days we felt was still much too long.

“Working with NHS Stockport, we have helped to bring this waiting time down to an average of seven days.”

Joyce and Clem set up meetings with Cath Comley at NHS Stockport who commissions David Ormerods to provide hearing aid repairs.

Together they worked at finding ways to improve the service.

Cath said “The LINk alerted us to issues relating to the audiology service that we weren’t aware of so we’ve worked hard with them to resolve the problems.

“It’s made a big difference to waiting times for patients and has also helped us improve other areas of the service that Ormerods provide.

“This work has cemented our good relationship with the LINk and we look forward to having their positive input for years to come.”

A full report on the work of the task group will be avaliable on this website once finalised

Department of Health Consult over changes in the NHS.

The documents, Commissioning for Patients and Local Democratic Legitimacy in Health provide further detail on the principles of the policies set out in the White Paper, and seek views from the public and external partners on some of the questions arising out of them.

Both documents seek views on a number of questions by 11 October. You can feed directly back to the Department of Health, or get in contact with the LINk. We are looking to create a task group to look at the consultations. If you are interested in joining this group, call the LINk on 0161 477 8479 or email us at links@pebbleenterprises.co.uk.

All documents are available in the Key Documents area of our website.

You can view the documents directly by clicking on the following:

Liberating the NHS White Paper

Written ministerial statement on the NHS White Paper consultation

Liberating the NHS - Commissioning For Patients consultation document

Liberating the NHS - Local Democratic Legitimacy in Health consultation document

Among many other points, the papers include discussion over the future of the LINks. The White paper, release on Monday 12th July announced that local LINks would become HealthWatch, an independent consumer champion within the Care Quality Commission.

Local HealthWatch will ensure that the views and feedback from patients and carers are an intergral part of local commissioning across health & social care as the LINks do currently.

Local HealthWatch may be able to offer advocacy and support, which the LINks do not currently offer.

Local Healthwatch will feed into a National HealthWatch, which will strengthen the relationship between national and local services.
